Third Judicial District Attorney John Belton tells state lawmakers he’s moving forward with convening a special grand jury in Union Parish to prosecute those involved in the 2019 fatal arrest of Ronald Greene. Belton says he delayed prosecution at the request of the U.S. Attorney, but he received clearance from federal prosecutors last week to pursue charges.
“My plans are to present all relevant evidence to the grand jury for their determination of appropriate charges,” said Belton.
State Police body camera video showed several troopers beating and tasing Greene after a lengthy police chase. Greene died a short time later. Belton says he believes state and federal crimes were committed.
“Based on the evidence I’ve seen and the investigation thus far, I believe some of the officers were above the law,” said Belton.
Belton says the feds are still investigating but will share their files and investigators to help his prosecution.
The Associated Press has reported six troopers were involved in the encounter, but Belton couldn’t give specifics to a House committee looking into Greene’s death who could possibly face criminal charges.
“I can not name particular individuals nor can I cite particular crimes, but I can say crimes have been committed that’s about it,” said Belton.
Belton says former State Police Superintendent Kevin Reeves, who was in charge when Greene died and current LSP leader Lamar Davis are not under investigation.
