State Police release more details about the officer-involved shooting in Lafayette early Thursday morning. Trooper Thomas Gossen said when Lafayette Police tried to serve a warrant to suspect 18-year-old Trevon Bonner, he barricaded himself inside his home. Officers then used an armored vehicle to breach the door to give Bonner a phone so he could communicate with officers.
“One of the officers noticed that Bonner was holding a handgun, they deployed CS gas inside the house, and at that point, Bonner fired the handgun at the officers and several officers returned fire, striking Bonner,” said Gossen.
Bonner was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Officers were trying to serve an attempted murder warrant to Bonner after a 13-year-old girl was shot hours before his standoff with officers.
Gossen said it’s become common practice for state police to be asked to investigate whenever an officer-involved shooting takes place.
“After our officers complete their investigate that’s turned over to the district attorney’s office who will review it to see if there’s any probable cause of any crime that’s been committed and take it from there,” said Gossen.
Details that state police have released so far pertain to interviews with officers on the scene and body camera footage from the incident. Gossen said the investigation is ongoing.
“They’ve gotten a lot done on this to be able to release this much detail this soon, and so I’m happy we were able to do that. The quicker we can do that the better,” said Gossen.
