An early morning shooting in Opelousas kills a 46-year-old man and a four-year-old and injures three children. Opelousas Police Chief Martin McLendon said officers had already visited the Mia Street address Tuesday night after reports of fighting, but when they arrived all was calm, but at 1 AM they received a frantic 9-1-1 call.
“Saying that there were several people shot, the caller was saying that her boyfriend was dead in the house and then her children were also injured by gunshots,” said McLendon.
McLendon said three children in the home were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds. A four-year little girl died at the hospital and her seven-year-old and 16-month-old brothers remain in the hospital.
“One of the live rounds went through the wall and a kid in the next apartment, the round grazed her head, but she did not receive any medical attention,” said McLendon.
Investigators say as a result of the fight earlier in the evening, others joined in and invaded the home hours later. McClendon said the shooter was a person inside and a warrant for their arrest has been issued.
“In thirty years in law enforcement, this is by far the worst crime scene that I’ve gone to,” said McLendon.
McClendon said the tragic shooting has been extremely hard on the community and those who responded to the scene.
