A high-ranking State Police trooper confirms LSP was involved in a cover-up to hide the facts surrounding the roadside death of Ronald Greene in 2019. Lt. Colonel Kenny Van Buren gave the admission during lengthy questioning by state lawmakers.
“We talk cover-up, potential cover-ups, we are agreeing with you all, we are totaling agreeing with you all, there is some much out there that we don’t know about and I’m just being honest with you, there are questions that we’ll never be able to provide you answers too,” said Van Buren.
Greene’s family was originally told he died as a result of a car crash following a high-speed chase, but body camera video of his arrest shows he was severely beaten by troopers.
Retired Captain Mark Richards told the legislative committee looking into Greene’s death he was ordered to block the crash report from being distributed, which he says is not normal protocol.
“I had never experienced it in my eight months of being there and I also talked to other individuals that had worked in the section, a lot longer than I had, and they had never been asked to block a report before,” said Richards.
Richards believes the alleged coverup involves several top officials of LSP at that time.
Baton Rouge Representative Edmond Jordan says the confirmation of a coverup leads to more questions.
“We’ve answered the question whether or not there was a coverup, I would be just as disappointed if I was a member of the public and saying why didn’t they go a step further and find out who was behind the coverup,” said Jordan.
The special House committee investigating the circumstances surrounding Greene’s death is expected to have more meetings.
