US Senate candidate Luke Mixon (D)
Senatorial candidate Democrat Luke Mixon said it’s time for Congress to enact universal background checks on firearm sales. Mixon is calling out his Republican opponent Senator John Kennedy who’s expressed sympathy for those impacted by the school shooting in Texas. Mixon said what we are doing isn’t working.
“We need to do this, we’ve been trying this long enough, the gun violence in our country is out of control,” said Mixon.
Senator Bill Cassidy has made a recent statement that expanded background checks and red flag laws would not have prevented the tragedy in Texas. But Mixon said a large majority of Americans support universal background checks.
“It’s ridiculous to me that 90% of Americans believe in something and 50% of our United States Senators lack the courage to do the right thing,” said Mixon.
Mixon who is a gun owner himself said he supports Second Amendment rights but said laws should be enacted to promote responsible gun ownership.
“It can’t be done responsibility if we don’t first check to see if that person is a felon or they have a history of domestic violence. I am calling on the United States Senate to pass legislation so that every gun sale in this country is initiated with a background check,” said Mixon.
Mixon is one of three Democratic candidates who’ve announced their candidacy for Senate. Activist Gary Chambers and Vacherie native Syrita Steib.
