It’s the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Free Fishing Weekend. LDWF Biologist Danica Williams said it’s the one weekend where a fishing license is not required. She said the annual event is ideal for residents who have yet to enjoy one of the state’s favorite pastimes.
“Each year we designate a weekend for free fishing as an incentive for families and friends to enjoy just the beautiful sportsman’s paradise that we have here in Louisiana,” Williams.
Even though a license is not required to fish in Louisiana this Saturday and Sunday, fishing regulations remain in effect regarding size, season, catch limits, and gear restrictions.
And in preparation for the free weekend, Williams said they have stocked 17 ponds across the state with ample catfish to improve your odds when casting a line.
“The point here is just to make it so easy or as easy as possible for folks to go fishing,” said Williams.
She said it’s the perfect opportunity for avid anglers to share their love of the sport with individuals who don’t have a fishing license and hopefully they’ll choose to take up the hobby as a result.
“Even if you are an avid fisherman, and that you love to fish, that you would just go grab somebody that has zero experience and take them out. I’m sure there are a lot of folks that are listening that would love to fish,” said Williams.
