The US House of Representatives has passed the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act, which dedicates $1.4 billion annually to prevent wildlife extinction. Executive Director of the Louisiana Wildlife Federation Rebecca Triche said the legislation will greatly help supplement funding to help preserve wildlife in Louisiana.
“Recovering America’s Wildlife Act provides funding that’s available for Louisiana to recover up to 345 wildlife species that we have that are of greatest concern,” said Triche.
Triche said this would mean a significant boost to help endangered wildlife and the state’s ecosystem. Current support for such preservation is funded by hunting and fishing license fees that are collected annually.
“We’re talking about up to $15-million possible each year for Louisiana, where right now we spend less than a million on this type of recovery work,” said Triche.
The bill now heads to the US Senate and in addition to bipartisan support and it also has strong support from Louisiana hunting, fishing, and wildlife groups. Triche said the bill is expected to be voted on next month.
“We’re excited we’re following it. Louisiana Wildlife Federation is encouraging our members to call our delegation and show support for this because it’s really important that we have additional funding,” said Triche.
Triche said three-fourths of voters in Louisiana agree that more needs to be done to conserve land and wildlife in the state.
