The Governor’s Office of Community Programs is hosting several back-to-school community fairs across the state, beginning Saturday. Director, Katina Semien-Smothers said because they understand that for families, and especially this year with inflation, it’s difficult to purchase school supplies and they wanted to make it a fun event.
“We’re going to be providing free school supplies, entertainment, sno-cones, inflatables, face painting, and more at each event throughout the state,” said Semien-Smothers.
Semien-Smothers said in the past they’ve donated school supplies or resources for agencies to purchase school supplies.
“So, this will be one of the first times that we will have actually purchased the school supplies, stuffed the backpacks, and actually show up to distribute them in the community,” said Semien-Smothers.
The first of four back-to-school community fairs will be at City Park in Natchitoches from 10 until 2. Semien-Smothers said the remaining fairs are in August.
“We are in Houma, Louisiana August 3rd, we are in Lake Providence at the Soul Food & Heritage Festival on August 6th, and we are in Lake Charles on August the 20th,” said Semien-Smothers.
Supplies to be distributed include notebooks, pens, pencils, paper, and more.
