Hurricane Ian has already started to make landfall, and will be one of the most powerful storms to hit the U.S in comparison to the four category five hurricanes in the past.
State Climatologist Berry Kiem says only time will tell Hurricane Ian’s true impact.
“With this storm your still waiting to see what the signature is going to be. There were estimates that we could see a storm surge between 12 and 18 feet on the south west Florida Coast,” said Kiem.
Hurricane Ian, Ida, and Laura all made landfall at 150 mph. Each hurricane has significantly made its own impact. Ian is expected to bring high rainfall totals and extensive damage based on the area and population.
Kiem says the damage will be horrendous.
“Its just basically going to rake its way across the whole Florida Peninsula so the extend of the damage is going to very large compared to other storms,” said Kiem.
Hurricane Ians force will allow the storm’s name to be retired.
Kiem says it can potentially affect Florida economically
“You know the dollar values in damage are going to be staggering with all these large population bases and high rent districts along with McMansions on the Florida Coast, and all the theme parks that crowd the Orlando area,” said Kiem.
