State Police are investigating the deputy-involved Sunday afternoon shooting in Rapides Parish. The incident claimed the life of 45-year-old Derrick Kittling of Alexandria who is the brother of Lousiana State Police Lt Colonel Kenny Van Buren. Master Trooper Casey Wallace said the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office asked LSP to oversee the investigation.
“But far as our Lt. Col Van Buren, he will not be involved in any aspect of the investigation, so all that will be held separately,” said Wallace.
Wallace said Kittling was pulled over during a traffic stop around 1:30 PM Sunday on 7th Street near Broadway Avenue in Alexandria. Wallace says a physical altercation occurred between the deputy and Kittling and Kittling gained control of the deputy’s taser.
“A physical struggle ensued, and the deputy discharged his firearm, striking him (Kittling) one time, and actually had to be transported to a local hospital where he did succumb to his injuries later on,” said Wallace.
Wallace said the deputy also received injuries from the incident, but they were not life-threatening. He said the agency will release more details regarding the incident and the investigation remains active.
