World Cup fever is underway with the world’s premiere sporting event kicking off Monday. So just how good is the U-S team? President of the Louisiana Soccer Association Sean Esker believes we might get an indication early on in their match against Wales on Monday.
“There was some statistic I saw where the US in the first 10 minutes in the World Cup has either scored or given up a goal, and so maybe we’ll have a better sense of after the first 10 minutes of that game,” said Esker.
That game begins at 1 pm central time Monday.
Because the World Cup is being played in Qatar this year, weather-wise its more ideal to play the matches in November and December instead of the summer.
US sports fans are typically focused on football this time of year, but Esker said with the tournament starting during Thanksgiving week and people off from work, it’s a good time to take in what the rest of the world refers to as football.
“Thanksgiving week gives you a chance to at least start off with your World Cup fix and get a sense of which teams may look primed to do well,” said Esker.
The hype is building for Friday’s match between the US and England. Esker said there will be plenty of watch parties for the 1 PM kickoff
“I think just the excitement’s going to be there because we have so many connections with England and we have so many English natives here in the community,” said Esker.
Because the US did not play in the 2018 World Cup, Esker said there’s plenty of excitement to see them return to the pitch this year.
