So far Attorney General Jeff Landry has formally announced his candidacy for governor and US Senator John Kennedy said he’s highly considering it. Senator Bill Cassidy said he’s not running, and Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser said he’s going to conduct polling next month and announce his decision in January.
“We’ll pray about it, we’ll look at the polls and get through the holidays and make a decision right after the first of the year,” said Nungesser.
The 63-year-old New Orleans native has served as Lt. Governor since 2016 and is also the former President of Plaquemines Parish. When asked if he would run against fellow Republican John Kennedy, Nungesser said he plans to talk to him first.
“I’ve asked for a meeting with him, we’re friends and so hopefully we can get together through the holidays and chat and see if he’s intending on running and what his plans are,” said Nungesser.
The state GOP formally announced their endorsement of Landry earlier this month and Nungesser called for LAGOP chairman Louis Gurvich and others to resign. Nungesser who he said his own father helped build the state party, said he’s disgusted over how the party has evolved.
“These backroom deals are not what the party was built on, and those aren’t true Republicans that made that choice. Shame on them for doing it and they should resign,” said Nungesser.
Nungesser said he plans to announce his intentions by January 10th.
