The United Way of Southeast Louisiana is encouraging donations to its Tornado Relief Fund to help families impacted by yesterday’s tornadoes. Michael Williamson is President and CEO of United Way of Southeast Louisiana.
“We think it’s important that we do everything we can to help impacted families get what they need to have the safest and happiest holiday possible,” Williamson said.
Heavy storm damage was reported in Marrero, and parts of St Bernard Parish, including Arabi.
Williamson said his organization is waiting to get an exact count of how many people lost their homes.
“Even if it’s a dozen or so homes that were impacted, that’s a dozen families or so that are going to be potentially displaced, have lost their Christmas gifts they’ve already purchased,” he said.
Williamson said when tornadoes have hit in the past they have given out cash cards. He is hoping to raise enough money through the organization’s website to hand out cards again this year. He said right after the tornado hit they distributed some emergency supplies. They are looking for volunteers to help in the affected areas.
“It could be a combination of helping with cleanup or oftentimes just handing out and delivering supplies. Personal hygiene products, cleaning products, things that folks could use right away,” Williamson said.
