Republican and former president of the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry Stephen Waguespack is also running for governor. As the fifth Republican to join the race he said he wants to make changes so more residents will choose to stay and thrive in Louisiana versus moving out of state.
“I want this to be an economy that works for everyone, school systems that meet every family’s needs, and safe communities where folks can grow and expand their business and their family here, and that’s why I’m running,” said Waguespack.
49-year-old Waguespack, who also served as a top aide for former Governor Bobby Jindal, said he wants to stop the brain drain. He said his knowledge and experience with business and industry will be a top priority for the governor’s office to provide better-paying jobs for residents.
“The other thing here is I really want to recreate high school and turn it into solid pathways for every kid, no matter where they’re from, every kid deserves a clear pathway to prosperity here in Louisiana,” Waguespack.
The father of three said another key to keeping residents is to reduce crime. He said if Louisianans feel safe and have better-paying jobs they’ll stay, and the better quality of life will attract more to the state. Even though the field is crowded with Republicans Waguespack said it’s not an issue for his candidacy.
“I’m not running against the other candidates; I’m running for Louisiana and that’s my focus and that’s my message and that’s where I’m going to stay. And I think the voters will respect that and they’re looking for someone who can lead like that,” said Waguespack.
Qualifying for the October 14th primary election is Aug. 8th through the 10th.
