LSU women’s basketball is heading to its sixth final four and its first since 2008 as the Lady Tigers defeated Miami 54-42 in Greenville, South Carolina Sunday night. It’s will be the fifth time Coach Kim Mulkey has made it to the Final Four during her 23-year career as a head coach.
“That’s what you play for, to get to Final Fours to win championships,” said Mulkey. “Do a little research, do you know how many coaches coach 25, 30 even 40 years and never made a Final Four and never won a championship, it’s so hard to do.”
Both teams shot the ball poorly last night as the Lady Tigers shot 30% from the field. Alexis Morris led the way offensively with 21 points.
“I mean we didn’t shoot the ball well, we haven’t been shooting the ball well in our last two games, but the only we can control is our defense and our effort and that’s what we did tonight and we let that dictate our game,” said Morris.
The 42 points are the fourth fewest allowed in the Elite Eight or later in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament.
All-America forward Angel Reese had her 32nd double-double, an SEC record as she had 13 points and 18 rebounds. Reese arrived on campus last summer after transferring from Maryland.
“We were underdogs all year and now to be in this moment, it’s just so joyful and exciting, because we worked so hard and we did everything coach said and now look at us,” said Reese.
LSU will play the winner of Monday night’s game between Virginia Tech and Ohio State in the national semi-finals on Friday night in Dallas.
