Northwood-Lena is the first school to win a title on both girls’ and boys’ teams in the same season. Coach Alan Tinsley after paying for other essentials during the year – there are no funds available to commemorate the achievement.
“You get blessed enough to go to the state championship that ends up costing about $7,000 and you’re looking at $6-$7 more to pay for championship rings.”
The estimated cost for rings for thirty-five players and coaches is approximately $14,000. Tinsley says the cost of the rings is incurred by the teams.
“A lot of people think the LHSA pays for them or maybe the Rapides Parish School Board or even Northwood High School but that’s not the way that any of that works.”
The team is asking community leaders and local businesses to chip in to help purchase the rings and currently working on a t-shirt fundraiser. Tinsley says it was a blessing to have churches to donate but but there’s a need for additional funding.
“If there are people out there that can find it in their heart to support these young ladies and men, either contact me or contact the school.”
