A new poll shows crime is the Number One concern on Louisiana voters. The poll was conducted by JMC analytics for Justice Action Network, and shows 40-percent of respondents replied they are more worried about rising crime and criminal justice than issues like the economy, the environment and public health. Pollster John Couvillon says on the surface that much seems obvious, but there is another takeaway in the polling results…:
“While crime is important, people are still of the opinion that – if it is a non-violent offense – a different level of punishment is warranted.”
The poll indicates we are worried about crime, but think jail cells are for violent offenders. The JMC poll sampled over 600 Louisiana voters. 7-percent of respondent were white; 28-percent black. The political party mix was 40-percent Democrat, 38-percent Republican and 22-percent independent or other party. Couvillon says the SECOND largest concern for voters is the economy and inflation…:
“Even though technically we have a low unemployment rate, I think the thought that you either have a ‘brain drain’ and/or jobs that are in other states and not here in Louisiana…I think that’s a continuous issue for folks in the state.”
Coming in third among voter concerns was Education. Couvillon says the subject has many fiscal and socio-political nuances that may deserve further in-depth polling…:
“Education is – to me – a bit to ‘catch-all-y’ of a term. I think there’s a lot more underneath the hood there than just that one word: education.”
