On the heels of Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin’s announcement that he will not seek re-election, Speaker of the House Clay Schexnayder has thrown his hat in the ring. The Gonzales Republican is term-limited in the legislature and said he wants to continue his twelve years of public service.
“I just feel the calling to keep doing what we’re doing, I see our state starting to move in the right direction,” said Schexnayder.
Schexnayder believes Ardoin and his staff should be commended for their work and the office’s top ten rating when it comes to election integrity.
“Look we’re always at the bottom of everything. I think the office has done a good job in keeping us in the Top Ten in election security, but I think we can do better,” said Schexnayder.
The Heritage Foundation’s annual election integrity scorecard ranks Louisiana as 6th in the nation.
Republicans: PSC Commissioner Mike Francis and Businessman Brandon Trosclair are also running and when asked what sets him apart from his challengers, Schexnayder said it’s his ability to reach across the aisle.
“You look at our path here at the capitol and being Speaker of the House and being able to bring people together and being able to find a common path that works for the State of Louisiana, I think that’s the difference right there,” said Schexnayder.
Baton Rouge Representative Barry Ivey is also reportedly considering running for Secretary of State. Candidates must qualify August 8-10 for the October 14th primary.
