
If you’ve ever wanted to learn more about your Celtic roots or you’re a fan of plaid, Minden is the place to be Saturday for the 2023 Scottish Tartan Festival. The festival which began in the 90s, for the first time is being held downtown, and organizer Shelia Hoh there’s plenty of music to suit anyone’s taste.
“Irish music, Scottish music, Celtic rock. We have some traditional, we have bagpipes of course,” said Hoh.
Along with American bluegrass music that was created by early immigrants from Scotland and Ireland.
Another first for the festival this year is the Highland Games competition between the clans.
“That’s like tossing the caber, that’s like that big light pole looking thing, and shot put and other athletic games,” said Hoh.
There will be festival food along with traditional Scottish food, Hoh said they’ll even have deep-fried Haggis balls, which are similar to Boudin balls. There will be plenty of kilts and a Bonniest Knees competition. And if you’ve ever wondered what your family tartan is.
“The clans are the families of the Scottish people, and they all have their own tartan. If you’re interested in learning about your ancestry, you can visit the clan tent,” said Hoh.
The festival gets underway at 10 AM and the final bagpipe will play at 6 PM. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 6 to 11, and children under five are admitted for free.
