A House approved bill by Belle Chase Representative Chris Leopold that would allow grocery and liquor stores to deliver factory sealed alcohol is on its way to the Senate floor.
“It can be ordered whether through a mobile app or telephone. However, the establishment handles the entire transaction,” said Drizly alcohol delivery spokesperson Alton Ashy.
Delivery would be prohibited on college campuses.
The person making the delivery would have to be a store employee certified by ATC to verify the recipient’s age. Ashy says that is one of many safe guards put into effect.
“The chain of custody is never broken. The retail establishment with the permit is the one who maintains custody and is responsible for the delivery at all times,” said Ashy.
The employee making the delivery would also have the authority to determine if someone is already too drunk to be served. Senator Karen Carter Peterson asked about the chance of enabling an addiction.
“I’m not going to object, but you just opened up a whole new can of worms. So someone who is sitting at home and has had too much to drink. So let’s continue to support their alcoholism? I mean, really?” said the Senator.
