US Senator Bill Cassidy officially endorses Attorney General Jeff Landry for Governor. Landry is the perceived front-runner in the race and is one of five Republicans who’ve declared their intent to run. Cassidy issued his support this morning.
“They’re good people in the race and I’m friends with most, but as I have traveled the state, Jeff has been the candidate connecting with the most people from all parts of the state,” said Cassidy.
University of Louisiana Monroe political science professor Pearson Cross believes other Republicans will follow suit and begin to announce their support of Landry.
“This move to back Jeff Landry shows that there’s an almost insurmountable wall of Republicans supporting Landry and his juggernaut of a governor’s campaign appears unchecked,” said Cross.
Cassidy said Landry, like himself, is fighting to make flood insurance more affordable.
“And to get resources to restore our coastline. He and I both strongly support Louisiana becoming the leader in the new economy which will create thousands of new high-paying jobs,” said Cassidy.
And Cassidy said Landry also agrees the state must increase access to mental health services.
Cross said the momentum for Landry continues to grow he believes after the October 14th primary that Landry will be in a runoff against the lone Democrat in the race, Shawn Wilson.
“He certainly is sowing up those Republicans that matter and getting them behind him, as he continues to lead in endorsements and fundraising,” said Cross.
We’ll find out on August 10th if any of the seven formidable candidates drop out of the gubernatorial race. Qualifying is next week, August 8th -10th.
