In the week following Christmas, it is expected that many people will find themselves doing some shopping. Of the nearly 7000 people surveyed by the National Retail Federation, 51% in the week following Christmas. NRF director of retail and consumer insights Katherine Cullen said a big chunk of that crowd is shopping today.
“About 68 percent of holiday shoppers are planning to go out and browse and buy immediately after Christmas ends,” said Cullen
Cullen said the driving factor behind the continued shopping surge is the bargain hunting.
“They’re still finding great sales and promotions, they know a lot of retailers are doing that, but a lot of shoppers also want to use gift cards that they got. So they know their are great deals out there. They can get more bang for their gift card buck,” said Cullen.
Cullen said while the combination of shoppers looking for a bargain and those exchanging items may result in crowds at the stores, she adds the retailers are generally prepared for the barrage of foot traffic.
“We know retailers have been really focusing on having their stores staffed up, so we hope that consumers won’t face too many lines, but we know people are really enjoying the spirit of the season,” said Cullen.
