The Louisiana Department of Health is holding a back-to-school hygiene drive beginning today through September 15 in Acadiana. Regional Medical Director Dr. Tina Stefanski hopes the community joins the efforts of supplying essential hygiene products…
“We’ve identified a couple of middle schools in Iberia and Vermillion Parishes to start with and hopefully we’ll be able to expand. We’re starting off small but it certainly our hope that we’ll have such a great response that we can share with all schools.”
Stefanski says statistics show when students have their needs met, they actually perform better in the classroom. She says the supplies collected are not just for young girls…
“Combs, brushes, body wipes, soap, shampoo, all the things will be available not only to young girls but also to the boys at school as well.”
Stefanski says menstrual products, soap, body wash, toothbrush, toothpaste, body wipes, lotion, deodorant, and hair combs will be collected and delivered to middle schools throughout Acadiana. She says the goal is to reduce anxiety and improve self-esteem…
“To supply these children with the things that they need to maintain good hygiene so that they feel good about themselves. Good mentally. Confident in leading to a better academic school year.”
