Governor Edwards declares a State of Emergency due to the extreme heat. Spokesperson of the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness spokesperson Mike Steele says the prolonged excessive heat is putting significant stress on resources in some areas of the state and the declaration is procedural for funding.
“So if any of our local emergency managers get to the point where they need state support having this document in place allows that support to take place.”
Steele says they’ve seen problems crop up around the state due to the heat. He says the high temperatures and humidity are impacting agriculture and other industries. And low water levels along the Mississippi River are causing problems for water systems in south Louisiana.
“And you know we’ll do everything we can to support our local emergency managers as we’re dealing with these conditions.”
Steele says unfortunately the heat has been responsible for some deaths and visits to emergency rooms for heat-related illnesses have already exceeded the yearly average.
‘So right now we’re kinda keeping an eye on everything. We’re encouraging everyone in the public to make sure that they are aware of these conditions. It doesn’t look like there’s going to be a quick turnaround as far as the heat.”
