Louisiana Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple
Tim Temple will be the state’s next Insurance Commissioner after his only opponent withdrew from the race. And even though he’s not having to hit the campaign trail, Commissioner-elect Temple said he’s simply getting a head start on the job.
“The way the timing’s worked out I see it as having an extra 60 days to work with stakeholders, to identify the problems, the solutions, and implement those,” said Temple.
Temple says he’ll push for a special session early next year that will look at legislation to make insurance more affordable and available.
Back in October when the DeRidder native decided to run for commissioner again, he said he was also meeting with stakeholders to find solutions to the state’s insurance crisis. And while Temple said he doesn’t want to rush to failure with a half-baked plan…
“People are asking for a plan, they’re asking for what are we going to do, and I think the first thing that comes to mind is that nothing changes if we change nothing,” said Temple.
Temple said the insurance commissioner sets the tone as a regulator and he wants to make it attractive for providers to write policies in Louisiana and also be a consumer-friendly resource when individuals have problems with their insurance.
“I want the Department of Insurance to be very forward-leaning… working with insurance companies to make sure they’re working with a regulatory body that appreciates them doing business in the state of Louisiana and wants more companies to do business in the state of Louisiana,” said Temple.
Temple says he’ll also remove some administrative rules that would give insurance companies more flexibility when it comes to setting rates.
