State Ag and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain is asking for the public’s help in finding the person who intentionally started the Tiger Island Fire, the largest wildfire in Louisiana history, in Beauregard Parish. Strain says the fire has been active for two weeks and has caused large scale damage.
“More than 31 thousand acres have been set on fire resulting in loss of property, loss of homes, and cost millions of dollars fighting this. And its not over. Arson is a crime. This is a felony.”
He says the Tiger Island Fire is now 55 percent contained. While no details were provided on exactly how investigators believe the blaze started, Strain says the wildfire threatened the town of Merryville.
“Damage to more than 20 homes and structures. Six were totally lost in the area. We are making arrests in the fires that are caused by arson and by negligence. So give us a hand. We must stop this.”
The Louisiana Forestry Association is offering up to two thousand dollar reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction. Strain says the wildfire placed a lot of lives at risk and someone will be held liable.
“Louisiana Forestry Association is offering a two thousand dollars cash reward for information leading to the arrest and the conviction of the person or persons responsible for this.”
If you have any information about the Tiger Island fire or any other arson-related wildfires call the Department of Ag, the State Fire Marshal,, or local law enforcement.
