West Monroe Football Coach Todd Garvin has been placed on administrative leave until further notice. KNOE TV Sports Director Aaron Dietrich says Principal Dan Lane made the decision after a player was hospitalized due to heat illness as he apparently worked too hard during Monday’s practice…
“I believe the school officials was like this is in their best interest to kind of evaluate and examine what happened and then gather all the details.”
Dietrich says four players have been sent to the hospital suffering from heat exhaustion since Garvin took over in May…
“It’s a weird situation and more questions are going to be asked. About how did it come about? What were these punishment exercises that led of course to some of the kids going to the hospital after practice?”
The Ouachita Citizen reports the player who went to the hospital on Monday was doing extra work because he missed practice the week before because of COVID.
Garvin is trying to bring West Monroe back to its glory years. Dietrich says the Rebels have won eight state championships, but none since 2011…
“When you have this whole scenario about perhaps they been a little lax in the past in West Monroe and then you get a new coach coming in and he’s trying to establish some discipline. So now you’re wondering how this is going to play out.”
Offensive coordinator Kevin Davis will serve as acting head coach. West Monroe beat Sterlington last Friday and will head to East Ascension this Friday.
