New poll numbers are out on the governor’s race. According to a survey conducted by Gray Media and Mason-Dixon polling, 40 percent of potential voters plan on voting for Republican Jeff Landry in the October 14th primary. ULM Political Science Professor Joshua Stockley says is not a surprise Landry continues to have a big lead over his opponents.
“Jeff Landry is the frontrunner. He’s performing strong. And there has yet to be any reason for him to be concerned about not finishing first in the primary.”
The poll shows the lone major Democrat in the race, Shawn Wilson holding second place with 24 percent. Stockley says Wilson should be much higher in name recognition, especially among Democrats.
“If this poll should be taken, a third of the voters still don’t know who he is and a third of the voters are still neutral. A lot of people don’t know who the Democrat is.”
Former LABI president Republican Stephen Waguespack is in third with nine percent and every other candidate had four percent or lower. Stockley says at this point none of the other candidates are in a position to move Wilson out of a potential run-off.
“There has been no increased momentum for any of these individuals. What they are currently doing has not resonated with the voters. Has not gained tract among the voters and frankly, it’s not working.”
The primary election will be held on October 14th.
