Republican Governor-elect Jeff Landry garnered more than fifty percent of the vote and avoided a runoff in a primary that had a turnout of only 36%. Landry thanked his supporters in Broussard Saturday night and said his victory is historic and symbolic.
“It’s a message that everyone should hear loud and clear that we the people of this state are going to expect more out of our government from here on out,” said Landry.
Democrat Shawn Wilson was expected to be in a runoff with Landry but came in second with 26% of the vote against fourteen other candidates. Wilson said he congratulated Landry and asked him to keep his word that he would continue Medicaid expansion for more than half a million residents in the state and give teachers the pay raise they deserve.
“And while we might not understand everything that Jeff Landry wants to do as governor, I believe he wants to try to do the right thing and it’s our job as Louisianans to make that happen. And when it’s when it’s not happening, it’s our job to call it out,” said Wilson.
Landry, who had the support of the state GOP for the past year, despite the fact that three other formidable Republicans remained in the race, said the journey to reform the state has only just begun.
“We’re going to start putting the smiles on the people of this state, where we’re going to say living in Louisiana is easy and bringing people here is more… God Bless you let’s have a great time, this is your victory. Thank you so very much, I love you,” said Landry.
Landry will be sworn in as the state’s 57th governor on January 8th.
