Governor-elect Jeff Landry takes office January 8th and has yet to name a Transportation Secretary. Lapolitics.com publisher Jeremy Alford says it’s a coveted position with federal transportation dollars available to spend.
“There’s a lot of cash moving through that department and there’s always a hub of activity,” said Alford.
The state’s next transportation secretary will have a major say about how to fund new interstate bridges in Lake Charles and Baton Rouge and other major infrastructure projects. Alford says Landry has options.
“Jeff Landry may bring in some folks from the Trump transportation agency when he was President, there are certainly some former and current legislators who interested in that job,” said Alford.
Expect more cabinet secretaries to be announced next week.
Landry has yet to a new Louisiana Workforce Commissioner, Economic Development Secretary, GOHSEP director, Natural Resources Secretary, and Coastal Restoration and Protection Authority director. He also has the option of retaining some folks, like current Corrections Secretary James LeBlanc.
Alford says there are hundreds of positions that need to be filled when a new administration takes over and it takes time.
“There’s boards and commissions, there’s actual staff that would be working on the fourth floor of the state capitol with Jeff Landry, and there’s just hires across state government,” said Alford.
