A bill that aims to notify restaurant consumers of the origin of crawfish and shrimp received final passage on Friday. Bill author, Larose Representative Truck Gisclair ,says the measure will require restaurants u to make it clear if the seafood is not domestic.
“It’s going to have to say country of origin or import and if they use domestic, they don’t have to worry about it. It’s a shrimp po’boy,” said Gisclair.
Gisclair says among the concerns are the levels of antibiotics used to preserve crop in the transportation process from other countries.
“It’s become, in my opinion, a health hazard. We’re becoming immune to antibiotics nationwide and we’re wondering why,” said Gisclair.
Gisclair says initially the Louisiana Restaurant Association was in opposition of the bill, but he believes they’ve reached a happy medium that is a win for both restaurants and consumers.
“We were able to go to the table, do some compromise, and I knew I had the votes to get it passed,” said Gisclair.
Country of orgin information is already required on seafood sold in grocery stores.
