BESE approves a new performance plan for schools and students, it’s called the “Grow.Achieve.Thrive” plan. BESE President Ronnie Morris says the plan will help set an expectation that high school graduates are ready for their next step in life.
“For a career after high school, or for college if that’s their choice or next step. It’s so important that we establish a foundation, a solid foundation they can build on,” Morris explained.
Morris says the revised system will utilize a 100-point grading scale, raise the bar for student outcomes, and place an emphasis on career and college readiness. Morris says the new system also allows schools to build relationships with businesses and community partners to provide internships for students.
“As we do that, and build these relationships, we really feel like this is going to address the concerns about out migration, people leaving the State and so forth,” Morris said.
Morris says students will have opportunities for paid internships while still in school.
Because only 34-percent of students are proficient in math and only 44-percent are proficient in English, Morris says these are the core fundamentals that schools can focus on to improve graduates’ readiness.
“They do have that solid foundation, along with those internships, that experience. They’re just going to be much better prepared, and we’re going to be setting them up for success,” Morris said.
The plan will go into effect for the 2025-2026 school year.
