While many Louisiana Democrats have thrown their support behind Vice President Kamala Harris to be the Democratic Presidential nominee, Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell isn’t immediately convinced she’s the best candidate.
“I think Ms. Harris is a nice lady, probably really capable. But I would like to see us compete. We’ve got some other candidates out there. I think they should have a turn, too. Let’s come up with the best candidate we can to win,” Campbell said.
President Joe Biden endorsed Harris when he decided to remove himself from the race, but Campbell says, like former President Obama and former Speaker Pelosi, he believes candidates should compete for the nomination.
“I’m just saying I am not for anointing someone just because Biden gets out. He’s for her. I am for a competition among the people who want to run for President,” Campbell explained.
Campbell says there are several good candidates he would like to see compete for the Democratic nomination including the Governor of Michigan, Gretchen Whitmer.
“The Senator from Arizona (Mark Kelly). He was an astronaut. He’s a Colonel in the Marine Corps. His wife was tragically shot while campaigning. I think he would be a good candidate,” Campbell said.
Campbell says, if Harris gets the nomination, he will support her.
