According to the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, there are almost 78-thousand illegal school bus passes annually in Louisiana. State Trooper Eddie Thomas wants to remind motorists to halt when the stop sign on a school bus is out because children are either entering or exiting the bus.
“And you have vehicles traveling in two different directions, when the bus turns on their stop sign, cars going both directions need to stop,” said Thomas.
Thomas said when there’s a divided highway with a center turning lane with two travel lanes on either side the rule is different when it comes to a school bus…
“Only traffic moving in the same direction as the bus is required to stop when the bus’s red lights are flashing. However oncoming traffic does need to proceed with caution,” said Thomas.
And if you’re driving your children to school remember to have them properly restrained anytime they are in a vehicle. Thomas said children under the age of 13 need to ride in the back seat whenever possible.
“For younger children, it is recommended that they remain in rear-facing vehicle until about the age of two years old. Or until they’ve outgrown the weight or height limit of their car seat,” said Thomas.
If you have any questions about properly restraining your child and the proper use of a child seat, Thomas said you can contact your local State Police Troop, and they will be happy to assist you.
