A tragic story out of Montegut as state police are investigating a school bus crash that led to the death of 7-year-old Jeremiah Falgout. Trooper Tiah Larvadain says the bus was traveling south on LA Highway 665, and, after activating the flashing warning lights, stopped to drop off several children, including Falgout.
“For reasons still under investigation, as the bus resumed its southbound travel, Jeremiah Falgout was struck by the bus and sustained critical injuries,” she says.
Falgout later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. The bus driver was restrained and uninjured in the crash, and no other passengers were injured. Larvadain says the driver wasn’t under the influence.
“Although impairment was not suspected, the school bus driver voluntarily submitted to a breath test which showed no alcohol detected,” she explains.
The Terrebonne school district released a statement saying they were aware of the accident and working with authorities, adding, “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the student, the student’s family and the bus driver involved in the accident.” Grief counselors are at Montegut Elementary, where Falgout attended school.
