State Police have arrested 26-year-old Oscar Perez-Moran of Arabi after he allegedly struck and killed DOTD worker 23-year-old Eric Anthony Jr. on I-610 West in New Orleans yesterday. Anthony was assisting a disabled vehicle when Perez-Moran veered onto the shoulder, hitting Anthony and two other vehicles. Trooper Jacob Pucheu (Pee-shoo) says Anthony was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
“It’s a tragic event when a vesical is traveling off the road that far and then hits a person but then also two vehicles… there’s going to be significant damage and if anybody is in the car there’s definitely an injury.
The crash occurred as Anthony, a Motorist Assistance Patrol (MAP) employee, was retrieving equipment to assist a stranded motorist. Perez-Moran was hospitalized and faces charges of negligent homicide and other traffic-related offenses. Pucheu says any serious injury or fatal crash by law blood or breath test are taken…
“to verify that people were not impaired at the time. I do know that he was given a test and we’re just waiting for the results to come back.”
Pucheu emphasized the inherent danger of roadside work and urged drivers to follow the state’s “move-over” law, which requires motorists to slow down or change lanes when approaching emergency vehicles.
“Give these guys and these girls space to do there job and work and be safe. So please slow down or move over.”
Investigators are still determining why Perez-Moran’s vehicle left the road. Routine toxicology tests are pending.
