A huge announcement from Saints Coach Dennis Allen during his media availability Wednesday.
“I’m sure you guys are all going to be wondering who’s going to be the quarterback. Spencer Rattler will be the quarterback for this game,” Coach Allen told reporters.
Allen says a lot of thought went into this decision.
“We talked a lot as a staff about what we felt like was the best thing for us and giving us the best chance to win the game,” said Allen. “That was a decision that we made, and we’re excited about him getting an opportunity to go in there, and we’ll let him go play and see what he can do.”
Jake Haener had entered the season as the number-two quarterback, and he went into the game Monday night after Derek Carr went down with his oblique injury.
Allen says the number-two role was fluid from the get-go.
“We just internally talked a lot about it and felt like in this particular game that he was going to give us the best chance to win. Both him and Jake — both have been practicing extremely hard preparing to be the starter. It was kind of the conversation that we had at the beginning of the year that Jake would be the two to start but there’s basically going to be kind of a week to week deal, and we just felt like this was, for this game, was going to give us the best opportunity.”
Allen says they’re adjusting the offense to suit Rattler’s strengths.
“We’re going to put some plays in that we feel like he’s able to run, and we feel very confident in his ability.”
During the three preseason games this season, Rattler completed 20 of 38 passes for 202 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions.
Rattler will try to lead the Saints to their first win since week two; kickoff at the Superdome Sunday is at noon.
