For the third year in a row, Louisiana’s statewide school performance score has increased, and it is now at its highest level under the current scoring system.
Louisiana’s 2024 statewide school performance score is 80.2, compared to 78.5 in 2023.
“That tells us that our academic strategy is the right one,” says State Superintendent Dr. Cade Brumley. “We just have to keep working hard and making smart decisions to keep pushing forward.”
Brumley says the steady rise in school performance is a testament to the work of everyone involved.
“The fact that we’ve released our third consecutive year of academic growth is a testament to the students across the state,” Brumley says, “but also the support that schools are receiving from parents and the hard work that teachers are doing.”
But Brumley knows that the job is not done yet.
“Louisiana is a state that’s long been challenged academically,” Brumley notes, “and we still have a lot of work to do.”
The state has issued school performance scores for public schools since 1999, and the scores are based on student achievement data.
The Louisiana Department of Education says this is the latest in a list of data that shows that students are making great academic gains since the pandemic.
Among them — Louisiana has achieved its highest national rankings ever, moving from 46th to 40th on the Best States ranking from U.S. News and World Report.
“We’ve never ranked higher nationally in the State of Louisiana for pre-K through 12 ratings,” says Dr. Brumley, “but we still have work to do.”
LDOE also notes that 4th graders led the country in reading growth, and economically disadvantaged 4th graders improved from 42nd to 11th in reading on The Nation’s Report Card.
It also points out that Louisiana is one of only three states where the average reading achievement in 2023 was above 2019 (pre-pandemic) levels, with Illinois and Mississippi being the other two.
Furthermore, Louisiana students in grades K-3 improved their reading scores by 10 percentage points on the state’s first universal literacy screener.
