A Rapides Parish Sheriff’s deputy is recovering after being shot by a patient at a psychiatric treatment facility.
Tommy Carnline, public information officer and chief of staff, says there was a disturbance between the patient and hospital employees, and the patient started fighting with a deputy who was trying to de-escalate the situation.
“During that struggle, he managed to disarm one of our deputies and shot them in the upper thigh,” says Carnline. “And with that happening, the other deputy returned fire and shot the suspect.”
Carnline says both the deputy and the suspect were taken to hospitals.
“The deputy was treated and released late last night for their injuries that they sustained,” Carnline says. “The suspect is still in the hospital as of this time.”
Carnline says this could have ended much worse for everyone involved.
“We’re very thankful that our deputy was not injured too bad,” says Carnline.
The investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
