Today is Giving Tuesday in Louisiana, encouraging residents across the state to support charitable causes and engage in acts of generosity. Taking place on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, United Way Southeast Louisiana CEO Michael Williamson says it provides an opportunity for individuals, businesses, and organizations to unite in addressing community needs and driving positive change.
“Our hope is that they’ll look at organizations like United Way of Southeast Louisiana. It’s used to make a charitable gift to us and allow us to do our work. We’re trying to help more families become independent and self-sufficient. With the support of local donors, we can make that happen,” Williamson said.
In Louisiana, the day often highlights the unique culture, challenges, and spirit of its communities. Nonprofits, schools, and faith-based organizations across the state participate by organizing fundraisers, volunteer events, and awareness campaigns. Williamson says donating one dollar can have a 14-dollar impact on our communities.
“So that means housing the homeless, helping little kids get ready for school or helping families that are food-insecure get access to healthy food. United Way’s unique approach allows us to leverage an individual’s single dollar, and we’re able to generate over 14-dollars in impact,” Williamson explained.
Coming off Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Williamson says it’s amazing to see how much Giving Tuesday has grown over the years and having a day where people are willing to give.
“Even when families are struggling, they often feel grateful for what they do have. And so, for families in a position to make a small gift to help out their community, the United Way wants to be that organization, that trusted partner that helps accomplish that,” Williamson said.
