Senator John Kennedy is hailing the passage of the Social Security Fairness Act. The act eliminates two provisions that reduced the Social Security benefits of people who worked in the public sector. Senator Kennedy said good riddance to them.
“These two provisions, the windfall elimination provision and the government pension offset provision were penalizing public servants, teachers, cops, firefighters for working hard to earn their pensions.”
Kennedy said Social Security is not free and belongs to the people who paid into it.
“People pay in social security. The money that we spent today in this bill, all we did was give it back to the people that earned it.”
Kennedy said the act, once signed into law, will benefit everyone who has paid into the system.
“It was a good day for fairness. It was a good day for the Social Security System, and it was a good day for the people of Louisiana. Even if you weren’t affected by these two unfair provision of the Social Security Act.
