A hunter near Baton Rouge is recovering after being accidentally shot by another hunter. Lt. Jared Riddle with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says the hunters were hunting at the same time on a small piece of property in Zachary that both had permission to be on, but they were unaware of each other’s presence.
“It looks like the two subjects the two subjects did not communicate to each other and didn’t know the other was back there hunting. Both subjects were hunting from the ground and neither subject had any hunters orange on.”
Riddle says the hunter saw rustling in the bushes and thought it was a deer and fired his 20-gauge shotgun. Once he realized it was a person he went to help.
“He immediately went to him, and then he immediately called emergency personnel and got everything going from there.”
The injured hunter was shot in the arm and was airlifted to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital. His injuries are not life-threatening. LDWF cited the shooter for hunting deer without possessing deer tags and for not wearing hunter’s orange. Riddle says wearing hunter’s orange could have prevented this incident from happening.
“Along with other things. Its important whether there’s orange or not if you’re going to shoot something you need to know exactly what you’re shooting at, right? For safety reason and for all kinds of reasons.”
