President Joe Biden announced a ban on new offshore oil and gas development along most U.S. coastlines, aiming to combat climate change and protect coastal environments. This decision, affecting 625 million acres of ocean under the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act, covers waters off the East and West coasts, and the eastern Gulf of Mexico. LSU Center for Energy Studies Executive Director Greg Upton says this wont have no impact on domestic energy in the short term.
“And the reason for this is what were reallyl talking about is new areas that we could potentially lease in the future.”
Upton says Biden’s offshore drilling ban could affect production further down the line.
“In the long run this could lead to reduced oil and gas production in the United States.”
President-elect Donald Trump criticized the decision, promising to reverse it, though legal precedent suggests overturning such protections would require Congressional action
“So, according to the White House this is a permanent decision, and the white house of course claims that within their legal jurisdiction in order to make that decision.”
