LSU’s two Heisman Trophy-winning quarterbacks were big award winners at the NFL Honors Award Show at the Saenger Theater.
The 2023 Heisman Trophy Winner Jayden Daniels won two awards. Daniels was nearly a unanimous choice for AP Rookie Offensive Player of the Year. Jay Kid received all but one first-place vote. Raiders tight end Brock Bowers got the only other first-place vote.
Daniels had a spectacular season, throwing for 3,568 yards and 25 touchdown passes. His 891 rushing yards are the most ever by a rookie quarterback.
Daniels poise in close games stood out. He led five game-winning drives, including one in the playoffs and three of them ended with him tossing touchdown passes.
“He’s so chill, Weed smokes him to relax,” NFL Honors Host Snoop Dogg said.
Daniels also won the award for “Moment of the Year.” His 52-yard Hail Mary touchdown pass to beat the Chicago Bears in Week 8 was certainly the play of the year and at that point, you knew the Commanders would be contenders.
2019 Heisman Trophy Winner Joe Burrow won AP Comeback Player of the Year. Burrow’s 2023 season ended after ten games because of a ruptured scapholunate ligament in his throwing wrist.
Despite concerns the wrist injury could hamper the rest of his career, he had the best season of his career, throwing for 4,918 yards, 43 touchdowns, and nine interceptions.
It’s the second time the 28-year-old won the NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award. He also won in 2021, the season he led the Bengals to the Super Bowl, after having his rookie season cut short because of a season-ending knee injury.
Chargers running back J.K. Dobbins finished second in voting, followed by Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold.
