The Rayne Police Department is grieving over the loss of one of its officers who was killed by friendly fire.
Rayne Police Chief Carroll Stelly says officers were attempting to locate a suspect involved in a recent stabbing incident when shots were fired. Forty-eight-year-old Lieutenant Allen “Noochie” Credeur was hit and died at the scene from his injuries.
Chief Stelly calls it a devastating accident.
Credeur started at the Rayne Police Department in 2003 as a reserve officer and became full-time in 2005. In 2014, he took on the role of D.A.R.E officer. Credeur was also known for volunteering with local youth athletes, coaching, mentoring and leading by example both one and off duty.
“Lt. Credeur was more than officer,” said Chief Stelly. “He was a brother, a friend, and a role model. He served with pride, humility, and an unmatched sense of duty. He had a special way of connecting with people, especially young people, and was truly invested in making Rayne a safer, stronger place to live.”
Lt. Credeur was engaged to Danielle Demette. He also has a brother at the Rayne Police Department, Sergeant Joseph Credeur.
State Police is leading the investigation into the shooting. At this time, LSP is unsure why a Rayne Police officer fired their serve weapon which struck Credeur.
Funeral arrangements and memorial services are pending.
“Lt. Credeur’s legacy of service, compassion, and leadership will never be forgotten. He gave this city everything he had, and we are forever grateful.”
