An iconic New Orleans company is returning as Hubig’s Pies announces plans to restart production after a fire burned down their old facility. The longtime producer of fried fruit pies will open a new $1.3 million facility in Jefferson Parish. Jefferson Economic Development Commission President Jerry Bologna says many Louisianans grew up on the treats and they will bring back their original recipes.
“I’m one of them, growing up as a fan of that lemon pie. I think so many people have a fondness and an affinity for the brand and the taste and they can’t wait to enjoy those flavors again,” said Bologna.
A 2012 fire resulted in the dormancy of the brand that had been in New Orleans for 90 years. Bologna says Hubig’s pies will bring in quality jobs with annual salaries that average just over $40,000.
“The relaunch of Hubig’s Pies is going to result in 14 direct jobs and 16 indirect jobs, so really 30 new jobs,” said Bologna.
Bologna says the planned launch is set for 2020 and are currently looking to finalize a facility location to accommodate local distribution and e-commerce.
“We’re known for our food, we’re known for that part of the culture, and to be able to capture yet another food manufacturer in this region speaks well to our ability to export those goods,” said Bologna.
