PSC Commissioner Foster Campbell
In 2021, Louisiana Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell predicted that LSU would be responsible for paying a hefty buyout to Brian Kelly before he even stepped onto the field. Nearly four years later, Campbell says I told you so.
“I said this is crazy, that this guy wouldn’t be here, and they would owe him $50 million. I’m certainly not a prophet, but I knew that this was a bad deal from the get-go,” Campbell said.
Campbell says LSU should have never given Kelly a 10-year contract without it being incentive-based.
“I thought it was foolish for LSU to give a man a ten-year open contract. I thought that we should have been more responsible, give him maybe three years to prove himself. And if he did, you can talk about what you’re going to pay him,” Campbell explained.
Campbell says the LSU Board of Supervisors did not handle Kelly’s contract well and says it needs to avoid the same mistake with this next coach search.
“I don’t think they did a good job at all in letting this contract go through. I think they should be talking to the athletic director and making sure that this never happens again,” Campbell said.
