With hurricane season just two months away, insurance brokers are urging you to consider putting a FORTIFIED roof on your home.
Starting January 1st, insurers will be required to give discounts for homes with FORTIFIED roofs; and Beth Swanson, an analyst with insurance comparison website The Zebra, says depending on where you live and the level of fortification, those discounts can be substantial.
“Homeowners could save essentially 50-55% if they’re in a certain region, the South, and they’ve gotten the highest designation on their home that they can,” Swanson explained.
Swanson says even if your roof doesn’t rise to the level of basic fortification, you can still get a discount on your homeowners insurance if you use certain materials in building your roof.
“If you’ve had to replace your roof and you go with a Class 4 shingle with ice and water shield, things like that, in a lot of places you can get a discount off your insurance policy for that,” Swanson said.
Swanson says once you put a FORTIFIED roof on your house, your insurance company will ensure that you will always have a FORTIFIED roof on your house.
“In the event that there is a highly destructive storm and you need your roof replaced, if you’ve paid for that FORTIFIED endorsement, then the insurance company needs to rebuild it to FORTIFIED standards,” Swanson said.
