The village of Turkey Creek now holds the distinction of having the youngest mayor to hold the office in the history of the state. Phillip Cavins, who has taken the office at the age of 23, said growing up, he’s always had an interest in government and politics.
“Eventually the opportunity presented itself, so I threw my name in the hat to run for the mayor for the village of Turkey Creek and nobody else qualified against me, so I actually went in unopposed,” said Cavins.
Cavins said he grew up on the outskirts of city limits, and has fond memories of growing up, riding bikes, skateboarding, and playing basketball in the area.
“It’s a place I’ve grown up and I call home, so whenever I’d seen the opportunity to help the people of the community I call home, I decided to take this step,” said Cavins.
Cavins said the age distinction didn’t dawn on him. Once he qualified for the position and found out he was running unopposed, someone reached out and let him know he was likely the youngest mayor in the history of the state.
“We started doing research and from what they found, the youngest sworn was sworn in at 28. That’s pretty cool I’m making history along with doing something that I love and helping my community out all at the same time,” said Cavins.
