Registration for the Fortified Roof Program lottery closes Friday at 5 p.m. 3,000 individuals will receive grants of up to $10,000 for a new fortified roof. Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple said homeowners can create a profile and register their primary residence for the lottery at ldi.la.gov.
“It can’t be a rental property or your second home or your fishing camp you go to a couple times; it’s got to be where you put your head a night to qualify for the grant.”
A new law signed last month allowed $50 million in Louisiana Citizens Insurance excess Katrina bonds to be allocated to the Fortified Roof Program. Temple said Louisiana is the fastest-growing state in the country for FORTIFIED.
“We have just at 5,000 roofs after a little over 2.5 years,” he said. “We’re about to put on 8,000 roofs in the next 12 months.”
Temple said fortified roofs protect against extreme weather and extreme homeowners’ insurance prices. Resilient roofs limit claims, prevent damage and lower insurance rates.
“If you have a fortified roof, every admitted company in the state of Louisiana has a filed discount with us,” said Temple. “You can go on our website. You can look and see what it is. You can look and see what the range is before you put a fortified roof on.”
